News About Us

The Center for Bioethics was established in April of 2002 to address the ethical implications of rapid and extraordinary advances in health care, social policy, and biotechnology that have generated unprecedented ethical dilemmas.  Since that time, we have become a highly active, productive, valued, and unique addition to the Columbia community, integrating the faculties of the entire University.

The Center for Bioethics provides an inter-disciplinary, inter-professional forum to advance both public understanding and scholarly work on contemporary issues in Bioethics.  The Center explores these issues by providing education, promoting research, and offering service to diverse communities.

Provide Education
ur goal is to establish broad, comprehensive, and systematic educational programs to address current and emerging bioethical issues.  We present seminars, courses, and conferences, develop distance-learning curricula, and partner with other Schools and Centers such as the Columbia University Law School, the Mailman School of Public Health, and The Hastings Center.

Promote Research
We conduct research and publish in our areas of expertise to facilitate professional as well as public understanding and we support scholarly work to advance the burgeoning field of Bioethics.

Offer Service
Service is integral to our mission, given our geographic location and our abilities to assist the community.  “Community” we view broadly, from faculty and students, to hospital personnel, residents of our local area, the greater New York region, and beyond.

The Columbia University Center for Bioethics is located in northern Manhattan, part of an urban neighborhood that is ethnically and economically diverse.  This setting uniquely positions the Center for cross-cultural work with distinct communities, and collaboration with national and international academic partners.  The Center serves as a link between the uptown (medical center) and downtown campuses.

The Center for Bioethics promotes collaboration among individuals, faculties, centers, and institutes from the Washington Heights and the Morningside campuses, as well as from other colleges, universities, medical centers, and communities in the New York City area and beyond.  We have collaborated with
